Roaming Profiles

When you logon to one of the new Dell computers a roaming profile will be automatically downloaded to the computer you are using until you log off. Any changes that you make to your profile will be saved back to the server. Examples of some of the preferences contained in your roaming profile contains include:

  • Desktop Settings
  • Items On Your Desktop
  • Browser Settings
  • Email Settings
  • My Documents Folder ~ This is your personal space on the Staff File Server, also known as the H: drive.

Be sure to log off of the Dell computers when you are finished. Because of roaming profiles, when you logon to a machine, everything is mapped to your files. If you forget to log off and someone else sits at that computer, they will have access to your files and they will be unable to save their work to their own server space.

Troubleshooting Tips
  • The more you have saved to your desktop, the longer it is going to take to logon and to log off.
  • If for some reason you cannot access your roaming profile (i.e. green cord not plugged in, drop not working, etc.) the computer will attempt to use a local copy of your profile instead of your remote profile, which may be out of date. If there isn't a local copy on that machine because you've never sat at that machine, a default profile will be used.

Indications for who is logged on to a Dell computer
  • Your name should be listed at the top of the Start menu.
  • Look in your My Documents folder and you should see your username beside the Pictures folder.
  • Select and Open My Computer. One of the Network Drives should have your username listed beside the H: drive (i.e. your personal folder on the Staff file server).
